Baylor football hires Carson Hall to lead outside linebackers unit

WACO, Texas —  After pit stops at Georgia, LSU and the last two seasons as the defensive line coach at Western Kentucky, Carson Hall was added to the Baylor football staff as the team's outside linebackers coach, head coach Dave Aranda announced Wednesday afternoon.

Hall joins the Bears fresh off a promotion in January that saw him elevated to run-game coordinator with Western Kentucky. He previously spent two seasons as the assistant defensive line coach at his alma mater, Georgia, where the Bulldogs went 29-1 over the stretch and won a pair of national championships.

"Carson is going to be a great addition to our coaching staff," Aranda said. "He fits all the needs we had in coaching our outside linebackers and will be a great asset for the talented group of student-athletes we have in that room. Carson has won everywhere he's ever been and brings an energy that will allow him to really connect with our program. He will be a great addition to our defensive coaching staff and I'm looking forward to working with him on a daily basis. We're excited to welcome Carson into the Baylor Family."

Hall, who played defensive line at Georgia from 2014-17, was named to the 30 Under 30 List of up-and-coming coaches by 247Sports in 2024. He joins former Western Kentucky assistant Jamar Chaney, who just finished his first season as Baylor's inside linebackers coach after being hired on Feb. 28, 2024.

"What an honor it is to join Coach Dave Aranda and this Baylor Football program," Hall said. "I've always admired Coach Aranda and the program he has built, and have always viewed him as one of the best defensive minds in our sport. The opportunity to join his staff, and work with such a promising group of outside linebackers, is very exciting. My wife Laurel and son Miller are excited to join the Baylor Family and can't wait to get going in Waco."

In 2024 with the Hilltoppers, Hall helped WKU earn a berth in the Conference USA Championship and the Boca Raton Bowl. The Toppers were fourth in the league in scoring defense, allowing 24.6 points per game and allowed only 20.1 points per game vs. their league peers. WKU ranked fourth in the league in sacks and third in turnovers in 2024.

The 2024 defensive line for WKU was led by first-team all-conference standout Hosea Wheeler, who led the league's defensive tackles in tackles and was also named to the Lombardi Award Watch List. In addition, defensive linemen Dallas Walker and Deante McCray earned honorable mention all-conference status.

Hall helped lead a strong defense in 2023 at WKU, his first season coaching the defensive line. Overall, WKU ranked seventh nationally in turnovers, with 11 fumbles recovered and 15 interceptions – which ranked 15th in the nation, while ranking 35th nationally in passing efficiency defense. Defensive tackle Hosea Wheeler was named all-conference, while McCray earned freshman-team honors.

A two-year run at Georgia as the assistant defensive line coach came during one of the best two-year runs in the history of college football, with UGA going 29-1 with two national championships. In 2021, UGA went 12-0 before falling to Alabama in the Southeastern Conference Championship. The Bulldogs then beat Michigan in the Orange Bowl and topped Bama in the College Football Playoff National Championship, 33-18.

As a defensive lineman at Georgia from 2015-17, Hall helped the Bulldogs to three bowl games, including the 2018 Rose Bowl and CFP Semifinal, where UGA bested Oklahoma in double overtime to advance to the CFP National Championship.
